The swim not only helps control the population of the ponies on the island and prevent starvation, it also historically has helped to be a fund raiser for the fire department. In 1925, the Chincoteague Island Pony Swim became a formal community event, complete with a carnival, bringing families and horse lovers together from across the nation.
