Race Weekend in Chicago: A Guide to Hotels, Logistics, and What to Know Before You Book

Chicago is one of the most active race cities in the United States. The flat lakefront course, reliable road closures, and massive spectator turnout make it a perennial favorite for distance runners, and the city’s infrastructure handles race weekends better than almost anywhere else. Whether you’re running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in October or one of the dozens of smaller events scattered across the calendar, knowing where to stay and how to get around is half the battle.

The Race Scene

Chicago’s biggest event is the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, one of the World Marathon Majors and consistently one of the largest marathons in the world. It runs in mid-October and draws tens of thousands of runners from more than 100 countries. Beyond the marathon, Chicago hosts a dense calendar of road races throughout spring and fall, including the Shamrock Shuffle 8K in late March, the Chicago Spring Half Marathon and 10K in May, and the Chicago Triathlon in late August, which is one of the largest triathlons in North America. Summer months bring a mix of shorter distances around the lakefront. The shoulder seasons, April through June and September through November, are the most active.

Where to Stay

Grant Park is the start and finish for the Chicago Marathon, and the surrounding Loop and South Loop neighborhoods put you within walking distance of the corrals. Hotels in the Loop are convenient but expensive on marathon weekend. If you book early enough, the South Loop offers slightly better rates with the same proximity. River North is another strong option, about a mile north of the start area, with a wide range of hotel price points and easy access to the city.

For the Chicago Triathlon, which stages at Monroe Harbor, staying anywhere in the Loop, Streeterville, or River North keeps you close. Avoid the far North Side or suburbs unless you have a strong reason. Race weekend hotel rates in Chicago spike significantly, especially for the marathon. A room that costs $150 in September can run $350 or more the week of the race. Book as early as the hotel allows.

Getting There and Around

O’Hare International Airport is the main hub, though Midway is closer to the Loop and worth checking if you’re flying Southwest. From O’Hare, the Blue Line train runs directly downtown for around $5 and takes about 45 minutes. Midway connects to the Orange Line, which drops you in the Loop in roughly 30 minutes.

On race morning, driving to the start is not a realistic option. The city closes significant portions of the street grid around Grant Park during the marathon, and parking near the lakefront is limited to begin with. The CTA runs early on race morning, and most runners staying in the Loop simply walk. If you’re staying outside the immediate downtown core, factor transit time into your morning plan.

What to Know Before You Book

Book hotel rooms the same day Chicago Marathon registration opens if you want walkable proximity at a reasonable rate. The marathon sells out within days, and hotel inventory in the Loop moves nearly as fast. Waiting until summer to book October lodging is a real mistake in this city.

Race-morning temperatures in October can vary dramatically in Chicago. It’s not unusual to start in 40-degree conditions and finish when it’s 65. Plan layering, and if your hotel has a bag check or gear storage option, confirm it in advance.

The Chicago Triathlon’s transition area is on the lakefront near Monroe Harbor, which means athletes with bikes need to consider logistics carefully. Most hotels don’t have bike storage, so asking in advance matters. Some athletes rent a secure storage locker near transition for the weekend.
