Race Weekend in Miami: A Guide to Hotels, Logistics, and What to Know Before You Book
Table of Contents
Miami is the only major American race city where the climate is as much a factor as the course. The Life Time Miami Marathon runs in late January, which is the one month of the year when running 26.2 miles in South Florida is not a test of heat endurance. That window, combined with a course that crosses the MacArthur Causeway, runs along Ocean Drive in South Beach, and finishes at Bayfront Park, makes it one of the more scenic road races in the country. Add the Hyrox circuit’s regular presence at the Miami Beach Convention Center, and Miami becomes a legitimate multi-sport destination.
The Race Scene
The Life Time Miami Marathon runs on the last Sunday in January, typically starting near the Kaseya Center on Biscayne Boulevard. The course takes runners east on the MacArthur Causeway past cruise ships at the Port of Miami, north along Ocean Drive through Miami Beach, and back across the Venetian Causeway to a finish at Bayfront Park. The 2026 Miami Marathon opened registration on August 1, 2025, and general registration for the marathon sold out by August 11. That pace tells you how competitive the field has become.
For functional fitness athletes, the Legendz Hyrox Miami Beach event was held April 3 to 5, 2026 at the Miami Beach Convention Center, drawing athletes from across the southeastern United States and internationally. Miami has been a consistent stop on the North American Hyrox calendar since the sport launched in the US. The Miami Man triathlon is another fall anchor, held in November and offering half iron and Olympic distances in Miami-Dade County.
Where to Stay
For the Miami Marathon, the start is at the Kaseya Center on Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami, and the finish is at Bayfront Park a short distance away. Staying in Brickell or the downtown waterfront area keeps you within walking distance of both. Midtown Miami and Edgewater are slightly further north but still accessible and often offer better rates than the Brickell hotel corridor.
For Hyrox at the Miami Beach Convention Center, staying on Miami Beach is the practical choice. The convention center sits near the northern end of South Beach, and hotels along Collins Avenue and Indian Creek Drive are all within a reasonable walk. South Beach hotel rates are uniformly high, particularly during the winter and spring season when race events typically overlap with peak tourism. The Wynwood and Midtown areas of mainland Miami offer lower rates and quick rideshare access to the beach venue.
Getting There and Around
Miami International Airport is roughly 8 miles from downtown Miami and 12 miles from Miami Beach. Rideshare from MIA runs $20 to $35 to downtown and $30 to $50 to South Beach depending on traffic. The Miami Beach Trolley and Metrobus connect parts of the beach, but most athletes rely on rideshare for point-to-point logistics.
The Miami Beach Convention Center is accessible from MIA by taxi or rideshare in about 20 to 30 minutes. Driving and parking in Miami Beach during any large event is slow and expensive. If you’re competing at the convention center, staying within walking distance is worth the premium.
What to Know Before You Book
The typical race time temperature and humidity during the Miami Marathon are above the ideal range for optimal marathon performance. Even in January, Miami mornings are warm and humid compared to what most northern athletes train in. A 70-degree start with 80 percent humidity feels meaningfully different than 50-degree conditions. Build your pacing expectations around this from the beginning rather than adjusting mid-race.
The Miami Marathon sells out in a matter of days. Book hotels the same week you register. Waiting until fall to book January accommodations in Miami is a real mistake, particularly because winter is Miami’s peak travel season independent of the race. Hotel prices in January on Miami Beach are among the highest of the year.
Race weekend in Miami also draws a significant number of spectators and non-race tourists. The areas around Bayfront Park and the finish line get congested early on Sunday morning. Have a post-race meetup plan with anyone joining you as support, and build extra time into any transportation logistics involving Biscayne Boulevard or the causeways.
Browse the full Florida race calendar for events across the state. Road runners should visit marathon hotels for more planning resources, and Hyrox athletes can find accommodation guidance on the Hyrox hotels page.
