Race Weekend in Portland: A Guide to Hotels, Logistics, and What to Know Before You Book

Portland is a city that takes endurance sport seriously without taking itself too seriously about it. The race calendar here spans road, trail, and multisport across a wide range of terrain, and the culture around running and cycling is deeply embedded in how the city operates. The Portland Marathon draws a field comfortable with hills and fall Pacific Northwest weather. The XTERRA trail triathlon scene at Hagg Lake draws athletes specifically for the off-road challenge. If you’re racing in the Portland metro area, understanding the geography matters more than in most cities.

The Race Scene

The Portland Marathon takes place on October 4, 2026. It is a Boston qualifier that routes through the city’s neighborhoods and draws a field of several thousand runners annually. The race has a devoted local following and is consistently cited for strong course support and organization. On the trail side, XTERRA Portland at Hagg Lake in Gaston, west of the city, is an XTERRA World Tour qualifier and one of the better-known off-road triathlon events in the Pacific Northwest. The Oregon triathlon calendar also includes the PDX Triathlon Festival, an Ironman 70.3 Oregon near Forest Grove, and events at Blue Lake Regional Park in the Portland metro area. The road race calendar is active from spring through fall, with the Hippie Chick Half Marathon in May and the Cinco de Mayo race series as spring anchors.

Where to Stay

For the Portland Marathon, which starts and finishes in the downtown core near Tom McCall Waterfront Park, the Pearl District and the Old Town/Chinatown neighborhood are the most convenient. Hotels in the Pearl District are well-positioned and walkable to the start area. The South Park Blocks corridor and the areas around Pioneer Courthouse Square are also practical. Portland’s downtown hotel inventory is solid and reasonably priced compared to coastal cities.

For XTERRA Portland and Ironman 70.3 Oregon, both of which stage near Forest Grove and Hagg Lake roughly 25 to 30 miles west of downtown, staying in Beaverton or Hillsboro makes considerably more logistical sense than commuting from downtown on race morning. Hillsboro has a light rail station on the MAX Blue Line with downtown Portland connections if you want to explore the city before race day.

Getting There and Around

Portland International Airport (PDX) is about 12 miles northeast of downtown. The MAX Red Line connects the airport directly to downtown Portland in about 38 minutes for under $3. It is one of the cleaner airport transit connections in the Pacific Northwest and eliminates any need for a car if you’re staying downtown for a road race.

For the Portland Marathon, driving to the start is not practical. Downtown road closures are extensive on race morning, and parking near the waterfront fills quickly. MAX and walking from your hotel are the standard approaches. For Hagg Lake events, a car is necessary. Highway 26 west from Portland takes you toward Forest Grove, and the drive typically runs 30 to 40 minutes from downtown, longer in commute traffic.

What to Know Before You Book

October in Portland means fall rain is a realistic possibility. The Portland Marathon does not cancel for rain, and neither do most Pacific Northwest events. Pack accordingly: waterproof layers, a dry bag for gear check, and the mental expectation that conditions may be wet. Experienced Portland runners train in rain consistently and it generally does not affect performance the way cold or heat does.

The trail race scene around Hagg Lake requires off-road specific preparation beyond what road training provides. Many XTERRA events list specific gear requirements and have strict cutoffs for open-water swim temperatures and wetsuit policies. Review the athlete guide for your specific event early in the planning process.

Portland hotel rates are moderate year-round, with some spike during the summer when the city draws more visitors. October marathon weekend is not typically the most expensive hotel period, which gives athletes more flexibility on booking lead time compared to cities like Miami or Boston.
